Trilogy Engagement Rings
Three stones for past, present, and future. More presence than a solitaire, more meaning than any other style.

What is a trilogy engagement ring?
A trilogy ring sets three diamonds in a row across the top of the band. The centre stone is usually the largest (graduated trilogy) or all three can be the same size (matching trilogy). The side stones can be the same shape as the centre or a different shape — pear or trillion side stones with a round centre is a classic combination.
The style has been popular since the early 20th century and was given a boost when Meghan Markle’s original engagement ring (before its redesign) brought the trilogy back into the spotlight. It remains one of the top five engagement ring styles in the UK.
Practically, the trilogy design offers excellent finger coverage without the height of a halo setting. The ring sits closer to the finger than most halo designs, which makes it more comfortable for daily wear.
Best settings
The three-stone format is flexible. Here are the main variations and what they suit best.

Graduated trilogy
Traditional & elegantThe centre stone is noticeably larger than the two side stones, typically by 0.15–0.30ct each. This creates a natural focal point and is the most traditional trilogy layout.
Best for: Classic proportions, all finger sizes

Equal-size trilogy
Contemporary & boldAll three stones are the same carat weight and dimensions. Creates a bold, contemporary line of diamonds across the finger. Looks best with round or emerald cut stones.
Best for: Modern aesthetic, longer fingers

Mixed-shape trilogy
Creative & personalDifferent diamond shapes combined — round centre with pear or trillion side stones, or an emerald centre with baguette sides. Adds visual interest and personality.
Best for: Anyone who wants something distinctive

Trilogy rings use more total carat weight than a solitaire, but three smaller stones cost significantly less than one large stone of the same total weight. A 1ct total trilogy (0.5ct + 2\u00d70.25ct) costs roughly the same as a 0.7ct solitaire.
| Specification | Natural | Lab-Grown |
|---|---|---|

Insider tips
Match the colour and clarity of all three stones. Even a one-grade difference in colour between the centre and side stones can be noticeable when they’re sitting right next to each other. Ask your jeweller to source matched sets.
Consider the total width of the ring across the top. A trilogy with large side stones can extend quite far across the finger, which may feel bulky on smaller hands. Try it on before committing to size.
Pear-shaped side stones with points facing outward create a beautiful tapered effect and make the ring look longer without adding bulk. It’s the most flattering mixed-shape combination.
