Oval Engagement Rings
The fastest-growing diamond shape in the UK. Looks larger, costs less per carat, and flatters every finger.

Why oval diamonds are everywhere
An oval diamond has roughly 10% more face-up area than a round diamond of the same carat weight. That means a 0.9ct oval can look like a 1ct round — at a lower price. The elongated shape also creates an optical illusion that makes the finger appear longer and slimmer.
The cut quality matters more with ovals than with rounds. Round brilliants have standardised ideal proportions; ovals don’t. There’s no universal ‘ideal cut’ grade for ovals, which means you need to assess each stone individually — or work with a jeweller who genuinely knows what they’re looking at.
The key measurements to care about are the length-to-width ratio (most people prefer 1.35–1.50:1) and the bow-tie effect (a dark shadow across the centre). Both are impossible to judge from a certificate alone — you need to see the stone or a high-quality video.
Best settings
Oval diamonds are versatile — they look stunning in almost any setting. The right setting enhances the elongated shape and protects the pointed ends.

Classic 4-prong solitaire
Classic & cleanThe most popular oval setting. Four prongs hold the stone securely while maximising the diamond’s face-up visibility. Clean, timeless, and lets the oval shape do all the talking.
Best for: Timeless elegance, maximum diamond visibility

Cathedral pavé
Elegant & refinedArched shoulders rise to meet the oval diamond, with small diamonds set along the band. Adds height and sparkle while keeping the focus on the centre stone. A refined, elevated look.
Best for: Extra sparkle, structured profile

Hidden halo
Contemporary & surprisingA ring of tiny diamonds sits beneath the oval, invisible from above but adding a halo of sparkle from the side. The best of both worlds — clean face-up with hidden brilliance.
Best for: Modern, subtle sparkle lovers

Split shank
Bold & distinctiveThe band divides into two as it approaches the oval diamond, creating a dramatic, open silhouette. Makes the centre stone appear larger and adds visual interest from every angle.
Best for: Statement style, larger-looking stone

Insider tips
Always check the bow-tie before buying. A faint bow-tie is normal and adds character. A strong, dark bow-tie means the stone is poorly proportioned. Never buy an oval diamond sight unseen from a certificate alone — the bow-tie isn’t graded on GIA or IGI reports.
The length-to-width ratio is personal preference, but 1.40:1 is the crowd favourite. If you’re buying without your partner’s input, 1.35–1.45:1 is the safest range.
Ovals show colour more than rounds, especially at the pointed ends. If you’re choosing a white gold or platinum setting, consider going one colour grade higher than you would for a round (e.g. E–F instead of G–H).
A 4-prong setting with prongs at the ends protects the pointed tips — these are the most vulnerable part of an oval diamond. Some jewellers use V-prongs at the tips and round prongs on the sides, which is the ideal configuration.
